Here’s a basic recipe for vegetarian momos:
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Water (as needed)
For the filling:
- 2 cups finely chopped vegetables (such as cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, and mushrooms)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
- 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust according to your spice preference)
- 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro (coriander leaves)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the dipping sauce:
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar or lime juice
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon finely chopped ginger
- 1 teaspoon finely chopped garlic
- 1 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
Instructions:
- Start by making the dough. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Gradually add water and knead until you have a smooth, pliable dough. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest while you prepare the filling.
- For the filling, heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add minced garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
- Add the finely chopped vegetables to the pan. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until they are slightly softened but still crisp.
- Add soy sauce, chopped cilantro, salt, and pepper to the vegetables. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool down.
- While the filling is cooling, prepare the dipping sauce. In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, rice vinegar or lime juice, sesame oil, finely chopped ginger, garlic, and chili flakes (if using). Set aside.
- Now, divide the rested dough into small, equal-sized balls. Roll out each ball into a thin circle, about 3-4 inches in diameter.
- Place a spoonful of the vegetable filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Pinch and twist the edges to seal the momo.
- Repeat the process until all the dough and filling are used up.
- Steam the momos in a steamer basket for 8-10 minutes until the dough is cooked and becomes translucent.
- Serve the hot momos with the prepared dipping sauce on the side.
Enjoy your delicious vegetarian momos!
